THE SOP POST Feb 2022

✍ With the Womo women's health course in full swing and having recently been so focused on the girls, this month it’s all about the guys!

Statistically, men are less likely to lead healthy lives, and are more likely to smoke, drink and have heart and obesity related conditions. 1 in 5 will die before the age of 65. Fortunately men’s health is increasingly in the spot light, and awareness is being driven through the media with events such as Movember, International Men’s Day and Men’s Health Week.

In this special men's feature it's only right that we put Roberto Salvati (osteopath) centre stage. We kick off our men's health features with our very own Roberto - read his blog on keeping up the good habits post January!

Then I've listed my six top tips for mens health, Anneli explains why Pilates absolutely is designed for men too, and finally Tracey answers some questions frequently asked by her male patients.

Onto things the SOP team have loved this month - we recommend podcasts and books as well as what we've done or learnt this month. Last but not least our recipe for February is a magnesium rich stress-busting man-size burger! The recipe is vegan but if that's not your thing just swap in a meat of your choice!

I hope you'll enjoy this special men's issue. We've really enjoyed putting it together. As ever we love to chat so please do let us have your feedback. Just drop us an email or message us on social media with your thoughts.

With very best wishes

Emma

Roberto Salvati, meet the man at the SOP!

Roberto is a registered Osteopath, having graduated from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019 with a Masters in Osteopathy, Diploma in Osteopathy and a Diploma in Naturopathy. During his final year of studies, Roberto provided a sports massage service for the England Beach Soccer team and for an independent gym in his hometown of Essex.

As well as the hands on work, Roberto aims to promote health by giving lifestyle advice and stretches to complement his treatment. In his spare time, Roberto enjoys staying fit and active by going to the gym, running and playing football. Other sports of particular interest include: beach soccer, basketball, snooker, darts, table tennis, squash…pretty much all sports!

Due to this passion, Roberto enjoys incorporating this knowledge of sports in his treatment room to allow the safe participation in sport and to ensure patients get the most out of their exercise.

Six top tips for men’s health

For the male population the main cause of death is heart disease, closely followed by cancer, but in the under 45’s it is, quite shockingly, suicide.

Take action now to improve your health and reduce your risk of premature illness or death.

It’s never too late, just start where you are.

Do men do Pilates? Anneli answers this FAQ for us....

Yes!

Did you know Pilates is a movement programme that was put together by Joseph Pilates, who initially taught it to injured soldiers in the First World War?

The movements are exact and controlled (Mr Pilates himself called it Contrology). The focus is on keeping your posture healthy and young, and moving your joints with ease.

Tracey Jefford answers men’s FAQs

Following on from last month's newsletter where Emma explained our theme for the 2022 newsletters, Tracey is the first of our practitioners answering the questions she often gets asked. Here are her top questions from men:

Q) I don’t know what you did but it helped my back and was very gentle. What was it?

Q) Do pelvic floor muscles apply to men too?

So click on the link to our blog to step into Tracey's treatment room and hear her answers firsthand.

Emma recommends an inspiring book about how to create positive change in your life: 'Redemption: from Iron Bars to Ironman' by John McAvoy and Mark Turley.

"John McAvoy’s Redemption: From Iron Bars to Ironman is a non-fiction favourite. McAvoy used to be an armed robber and was at one point one of the UK’s most-wanted men. But in jail he got really into fitness and it turned his life around – now he’s a world-recording breaking endurance athlete. It’s a really inspiring story about how it’s never too late to change your life.
