Movember - whatever you grow will save a Bro!

Whatever you grow will save a Bro!

Sorry guys, it’s a sad fact but men’s health is in crisis. Men are dying on average 5 years earlier than women, and for largely preventable reasons.

Movember are the leading charity that are changing the face of men’s health. The charity currently funds more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the globe with over 6.8million people participating in fundraising.

How Movember aims to make a change:

-       Give men the facts

-       Change behaviour for the better

-       Create services that work for men

-       Unite the brightest minds

-       Listen to the community and advocate for men

How it started vs How it’s going:

How it started: 2003 – 2 mates Travis Garone and Luke Slattery discuss recent fashion trends and the sharp decline of the moustache. Inspired by a friend’s mother who was fundraising for breast cancer awareness, they decide to make the campaign about men’s health and aim to fundraise for a prostate cancer charity. The 1st Movember has 30 guys willing to take up the challenge.

How it’s going: 2021 – The idea has grown (along with their moustaches) and they now focus on 3 main elements of men’s health: mental health and suicide, prostate cancer and testicular cancer. They now have 21 participating countries, 6.8m participating Mo bros and Mo Sisters and over 1,250 men’s health projects funded.

The Facts:

1.     Mental health and suicide prevention

-       Globally on average 1 man dies by suicide every minute of every day.

-       In the UK the rate of male suicide is alarmingly high where 3 out of 4 suicides are by men.

2.     Prostate cancer:

-       Most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK

-       1.4million men are diagnosed every year in the UK.

-       1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

3.     Testicular cancer:

-       Most common cancer in young men.

-       Odds of survival is over 95% which is great but some men require long term treatment related side effects which can severely compromise their quality of life.
